esDynamic

esDynamic

The esDynamic hardware security platform from eShard tests chips and devices against physical attacks. It connects to your lab equipment and runs side-channel and fault-injection campaigns from data capture to exploitation. It keeps every dataset, script and result in a shared project. The whole team can work on the project from anywhere on your network.

The problem with a typical hardware security lab

A physical-attack lab usually grows one instrument and one script at a time. An oscilloscope has its own software. A pulse generator uses another application. The setup also includes a positioning stage, a trigger box and Python scripts that only one person fully understands. Each campaign means rebuilding the setup. Large trace sets sit on a single workstation. When an expert leaves, much of the lab's knowledge leaves too.

esDynamic brings equipment, data, analysis and knowledge into one platform. Analysts access them from their desks.

How esDynamic works

A campaign in esDynamic follows the same steps for each attack:

  1. Set up the target. Place the device under test on the bench. After that, analysts rarely need to be in the lab. They control the equipment remotely through the esDynamic server and the esBox gateway.
  2. Create a project. Each investigation has its own project with datasets, tool settings, team access and findings.
  3. Acquire. Control oscilloscopes, probes, stages, pulse generators and lasers from notebooks or a dashboard. Capture traces or fault results.
  4. Analyse. Process and visualise the data in JupyterLab, using your own servers, GPUs or cluster.
  5. Exploit and report. Use leakage or faults to recover a key or bypass a check. Keep the full workflow as a replayable notebook.

What's inside

Remote, shared lab control

Several analysts can use the same lab equipment remotely, share acquisitions and work on the same project at the same time. The team shares the bench instead of accessing it through one person's workstation.

Project-based organisation

Each investigation keeps its own data, configuration and results. You can switch between analyses without rebuilding your environment. You can also return months later and continue where you left off.

An open data science environment

esDynamic uses JupyterLab and standard Python. Analysts can write their own scripts and algorithms without restriction. They can send demanding processing tasks to servers, GPUs or distributed computing. This supports side-channel work that routinely involves aligning, filtering and analysing millions of traces.

Hardware-agnostic instrumentation

esDynamic controls eShard hardware and third-party instruments through one Python API or dashboard. These include oscilloscopes, fault injectors, probes, motorized stages, infrared cameras and custom equipment. Recent releases added native support for Thorlabs instruments and Rohde & Schwarz oscilloscopes.

Insight trace visualiser

The Insight visualiser handles traces from about a thousand samples up to hundreds of megasamples without freezing. You can overlay traces and apply filters and alignment with instant feedback. An open Python API lets you control it from notebooks.

Project Manager for larger teams

Administrators can oversee many investigations, teams and environments in one place. They can also control access and organise documentation. A user panel and licence manager handle accounts, permissions and resource usage.

Attack methods in executable notebooks

esDynamic includes eShard's attack methods as executable notebooks. Teams can start with proven methods:

  • Expertise modules for advanced side-channel analysis: higher-order, horizontal, collision and lattice attacks; cartography with t-test and frequency metrics; and single-trace attacks on Keccak. Advanced fault-injection modules cover glitch shaping, laser integration and log analysis.
  • Deep-learning side-channel with PyTorch and TensorFlow, including profiled-attack techniques drawn from competition-winning approaches.
  • Post-quantum cryptography: more than 20 notebooks covering the evaluation lifecycle for ML-KEM, ML-DSA and FrodoKEM. These include fault attacks on ML-KEM and ML-DSA, plus background on the mathematics and leakage models.
  • Starter kits: lab packages with target hardware, software and guided notebooks. Examples include AES key recovery on an STM32 MCU or an i.MX8 SoC, an ML-KEM attack on STM32, and AES-256 on a Spartan-7 FPGA.

esDynamic in real evaluations

  • Post-quantum hardware IP. With PQShield, eShard evaluated unprotected and protected versions of an ML-KEM hardware accelerator. The evaluation used the attack paths in esDynamic's PQC module. On the unprotected version, about 100 power traces were enough to start recovering key coefficients. The evaluation extracted the full key. On the protected version, first-order attacks found no leakage, even with far more traces.
  • Certification lab. eShard helped DEKRA, the testing and certification company, design a modular lab on esDynamic. The lab combines side-channel analysis and EM fault injection. Engineers can move between leakage testing and fault injection without rebuilding the bench.

Choosing the right starting point

esDynamic fits several situations. The right purchase depends on your lab's current setup and needs:

  • No lab yet. Start with a turnkey lab for the technique you need first, usually side-channel analysis or EM fault injection. Equipment, esDynamic and training arrive together, so your team can run its first campaign soon after installation.
  • A lab that already has equipment. Add esDynamic to the oscilloscopes, stages and injectors you own. The platform provides remote access, shared projects and the expertise modules without replacing working hardware.
  • A team that needs skills first. Begin with a starter kit and coaching. Your team learns the full workflow on a known target, from setup to key recovery, before moving to its own chips.
  • A one-off evaluation. If you need a result rather than a lab, eShard can run the assessment in its own lab and deliver replayable notebooks.

Pertech helps you choose between these options and combine them as your lab grows.

Questions and answers

What is esDynamic?

The esDynamic hardware security platform is eShard's on-premise platform for hardware security testing. It controls lab equipment, runs side-channel and fault-injection campaigns, and stores data and results in shared projects.

Which attacks does esDynamic support?

esDynamic supports side-channel analysis, EM fault injection, laser fault injection, voltage and clock glitching, and photonic emission analysis. Analysts access these techniques through one interface.

Does esDynamic only work with eShard hardware?

esDynamic works with third-party hardware as well as eShard equipment. It controls oscilloscopes, pulse generators, motorized stages and cameras.

Do analysts need to be in the lab?

esDynamic analysts rarely need to be in the lab once the device under test is on the bench. They control the equipment remotely through the esDynamic server and the esBox gateway.

Can esDynamic handle very large side-channel datasets?

esDynamic handles very large side-channel datasets by scaling with your infrastructure. It can send processing to GPUs, servers or distributed computing. This helps when campaigns reach millions of traces.

Can I use my own scripts and algorithms?

esDynamic lets you use your own scripts and algorithms without restriction. It uses standard Python and Jupyter notebooks.

Does esDynamic support post-quantum cryptography testing?

esDynamic supports post-quantum cryptography testing through eShard's PQC modules. They cover ML-KEM, ML-DSA and FrodoKEM, with more than 20 notebooks including fault attacks. eShard used the modules in its evaluation of PQShield's ML-KEM hardware IP.

What is an eShard starter kit?

An eShard starter kit includes target hardware, the software environment and guided notebooks for a specific attack. Examples include AES key recovery on an STM32 or i.MX8.

Can several teams share one esDynamic installation?

Several teams can share one esDynamic installation. The Project Manager lets administrators oversee many investigations, teams and environments, with access control for each project.

Where can I buy esDynamic in Israel?

You can buy esDynamic from Pertech Embedded Solutions, eShard's partner in Israel. Pertech handles quotes, installation, training and support.
