True RMS AC Current Transducer (CTR Series) | 200A to 4-20 mA Split Case

What is the CTR Series True RMS AC Current Transducer and how does it measure distorted waveforms?

True RMS AC Current Transducer, 200A to 4-20 mA, Split Case

Item number CTR20000

CTR Series transducers combine a current transformer and a signal conditioner into a single package. This provides higher accuracy, lower wiring costs, easier installation and saves valuable panel space. The CTR Series transducers are available in 4-20 mA output only. The CTR Series provides a “True RMS” output on distorted waveforms found on VFD or SCR outputs, and on linear loads in “noisy” power environments. Select the CTR Series for variable speed or SCR controlled loads. The current waveform of a typical linear load is a pure sine wave. In VFD and SCR applications, however, output waveforms are rough approximations of a sine wave. There are numerous spikes and dips in each cycle. CTR transducers use a mathematical algorithm called “True RMS”, that integrates the actual waveform over time. The output is the amperage component of the true power (heating value) of the AC current waveform. True RMS is the only way to accurately measure distorted AC waveforms.

Frequently Asked Questions

1 Why is True RMS measurement important for the CTR Series transducer?

The CTR Series provides a "True RMS" output to accurately measure distorted waveforms found in VFD or SCR outputs and noisy power environments. This mathematical algorithm integrates the actual waveform over time, providing the amperage component of the true power (heating value) of the AC current. True RMS is essential because it is the only way to accurately measure these non-sinusoidal AC waveforms.

2 What are the key benefits of using the CTR Series transducer?

The CTR Series transducers combine a current transformer and a signal conditioner into a single package. This design provides higher accuracy, lowers wiring costs, and makes installation easier. It also helps save valuable panel space in applications.

3 For which types of loads or environments is the CTR Series transducer recommended?

The CTR Series transducer is specifically recommended for variable speed or SCR controlled loads. It is also ideal for linear loads operating in "noisy" power environments, where output waveforms may be distorted with numerous spikes and dips.

4 What is the output signal of the CTR Series True RMS AC Current Transducer?

The CTR Series transducers are available exclusively with a 4-20 mA output. This standard industrial signal allows for reliable communication with control systems.
