What is I3C and why it is important to you?

Prodigy Technovations leader in protocol analysis tools and logic analyzer technologies.

MIPI I3C was introduced in 2016 in order to provide a method of communication between computer peripherals to an application processor. This interface is used as lifestyles becomes connected and computerized. As sensor technology has been growing in leaps and bounds, and in some places, we see upward of 15-20 sensors in a device, a need for a scalable, cost effective interface was needed to be used in smartphones, the automobile industry, wearable medical instruments, IoT and more. The MIPI Alliance was established as the entity that defines and maintains this standard.

What are the capabilities of I3C?

I3C was developed to mange these multiple sensors in such way that it can be viewed as a multi-drop bus, but with reduced pin count and signal pass. Nonetheless, it provides a low power, low complexity, high-speed communication method unlike its predecessors – I2C and SPI. The latter are compatible with I3C, so legacy hardware is compatible with this new standard. The features of I3C are numerous including max clock speed of up to 12.5Mhz supporting 1.2-3.3 Volts, it allows high data rates, in-band interrupts, error detection, hot switching and more. Moreover, management capabilities are introduced for easy configuration. All these while maintaining backward compatibility with I2C and SPI.

Prodigy offers a new I3C Protocol Analyzer

Prodigy offers a new I3C Protocol Analyzer number PGY-I3C-EX-PD, to allow engineers to develop and debug this protocol. There is also an exerciser that enables the designer and test engineers to test the I3C designs for its specifications by configuring PGY-I3C-EX-ED as master/slave, generating I3C traffic with error injection capability and decoding I3C Protocol decode packets. The PGY-I3C-EX-PD supports basic and advanced triggering as you would expect from a protocol analyzer. You can set the device to work like a logic analyzer and thus trigger on any packets generated by the DUT or exerciser, as well as directed or private message. Using the Advanced Trigger feature in the device, you can monitor multi-trigger conditions.

Other advance features of the Exerciser are setting up custom I3C / I2C traffic generation which simulates real world network traffic, Error injection, Hot Join monitoring and triggering, API Support to interface with other test equipment and more.
